The 4Ds Model for Dealing with Distress was created in recognition of the demands and impact of stress experienced by people doing important work. This model is designed specifically to support staff wellbeing, and is delivered in an online format that can be easily delivered to large teams. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn a diverse range of ways to cope with stress, organised into one framework – the 4Ds pyramid.
Developed by Dr Louise Mansell colleagues, school and health staff, the session introduces a model of wellbeing not often seen before – one that holds deep respect for people’s own resourcefulness, while also helping to make sense of the ways we manage distress in everyday life.
Participants are supported to understand both the short-term and longer-term ways we all cope with stress, and why we can sometimes become overly reliant on short-term strategies. This can help explain why people may feel exhausted from trying to cope, without feeling better at times.
Participants will engage in live experiential exercises, including both short- and long-term strategies drawn from research and evidence, shaped for real life. The session offers an opportunity to reflect on current coping strategies, understand personal patterns, and explore alternative approaches in a supportive and engaging way – with no requirement for self-disclosure, and from the comfort of your own home or office.
In brief, 4Ds describes a pyramid of strategies that are grounded in science and developed in practice alongside the people it serves:
Distract, Dilute, Develop and Discover

Meet Teddy
This Teddy is more than just a teddy bear, Its a multi-sensory comforting companion with a voice box that guides children through a range of tried and tested activities to help children navigate emotions.
With features like fidget-friendly paws, a lightly weighted body and sensory tags, Teddy offers a multi-sensory experience that supports emotional well-being and resilience
“This is a truly wonderful product. The bear was treated like a VIP from the moment we brought it home. The impact was profound: my boys were talking about emotions more freely in such a short space of time, naming feelings, talking about times they were brave, and even creating their own emotional combinations. The parent instructions and guidance will be a welcome addition. ”
— Sally
Speech & Language Therapist
“It helped my daughter calm herself down independently, instead of needing us to help her, which she felt proud of having done. As well as using it as a definite comfort item, especially at night. The bear was involved in games, play, and even went on a bike ride.”
— Shannon
Mum of Three
“Our children loved the having the bear to sleep over. We had to take it everywhere with us, from setting up the morning picnic to bedtime, the bear was there.”
— Jess

“My two boys, 13 and 11 years old. Absolutely love teddy’s Deck of Emotions.
The fun, relatable cards have made it so much easier for them to recognise and express their feelings and emotions. I would highly recommend to all parents.”
